WINDHOEK, 07 NOV (NAMPA)
The Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Namibia Premier League (NPL) launched its 2018/19 football season in the capital on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, NPL vice chairperson, Boni Paulino said the season will kick off on Friday and is scheduled to conclude towards the end of May 2019.
He explained that the league was supposed to commence in September but due to the late conclusion of the first division competition, these plans could not come to fruition.
"We had to wait for the names and identities of promoted clubs from the mother body (Namibia Football Association). That is when we were able to schedule our annual general meeting and set up our fixtures list,"he explained.
For the upcoming season, Paulino said a different format will be used compared to previous seasons.
"Our next season will see us playing single headers per weekend compared to double headers previously. Clubs have also been given leeway to elect where they want to play their league games," he explained.
Paulino further explained that the single headers will be good for the physical health of the players and will help them to perform well and provide mileage and coverage to the NPL brand and sponsors, in addition to improving the quality of football played.
The vice chairperson said the NPL is still keen to appoint a chief executive officer, as negotiations are still going on despite the protracted nature of the exercise and that in the interim, an acting chief executive officer will be appointed until the end of the season.
The 2018/19 season will kick off with a match between Tura Magic and Orlando Pirates at the Sam Nujoma Stadium Friday evening.
